TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Karolina Pliskova takes on Ajla Tomljanovic in the Round of 32 on Saturday, September 4th, 2021.
Will Karolina Pliskova go through? Will Karolina Pliskova pull off the upset? This match will be an interesting one, where we have two of the most in-form players on the WTA Tour going head to head. Who will move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 US Open?
Karolina Pliskova has been playing some very solid tennis to back up her amazing run at the previous slam. She’s been serving as well as ever, and I really like her chances to get through Ajla Tomljanovic despite how well she’s playing also. Pliskova loves the fast courts, using her huge serve and big groundstrokes to dominante from the back of the court, Tomljanovic is really the perfect kind of opponent for her, being much like herself, only playing at a lower level. Pliskova doesn’t like playing someone more mobile who can really move her around the court, as she’s tall and relies more on power and depth than movement and consistency. She has a great shot to take this match and progress even further at the 2021 US Open.
Ajla Tomljanovic got a great win to upset the 30th seed and progress to the next round to set up a meeting with Karolina Pliskova. This match, however, will be much harder than that one. She will have to play some different tennis than what she has been playing thus far, as she plays much like Pliskova, and that’s not a good thing when that player is better than you at the same thing. She will have to serve very well, and because she’s been doing that already, the sets will most likely be pretty tight, however, she will most likely lose the big points and get broken just the once and as a result cost herself the entire set. In order to move on to the fourth round at the 2021 US Open, she will need to try and stray away from first serve, first strike tennis and focus more on moving Pliskova around the court with consistent balls, not necessarily balls that are that powerful as per usual.
Karolina Pliskova and Ajla Tomljanovic have met six times before, with Karolina Pliskova leading the head to head 5-1. They’ve met a total of six times over the last 10 years, so they should be rather familiar with each other as they will go head to head for a seventh time. After winning their first meeting in 2011, Tomljanovic has since then lost their next five meetings, including their most recent one just last year. As I mentioned earlier, Pliskova is just not a great match-up for her, and thus Pliskova has the number on her. I suspect it will be no different this time, with Pliskova being able to take advantage of the one-sided head to head and make a strong showing to move on to the Round of 16 at the 2021 US Open.
