A quality matchup awaits us in the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Mallorca Open. Top seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev will face fifth seed Casper Ruud of Norway for a spot in their first grass-court Semi-Final. Both men have been having solid years this season, who will get the win and advance here in Mallorca?
Daniil Medvedev is ranked #2 on the ATP Tour, and is the top seed here at the 2021 Mallorca Open. The Russian has had a very mixed season so far in 2021, with good results on hard courts and a disappointing clay court season. However, he did find some form at the French Open, very surprisingly reaching the Quarter-Finals there and will be hoping to carry that over to Wimbledon. His grass court preparations hit a snag in Halle, where he was dumped out in the First Round by Jan-Lennard Struff. While he has not had much success on grass, he does have the game for the surface with a big serve and penetrating groundstrokes. He started well here in Mallorca, defeating Corentin Moutet in two comfortable sets. In this type of form he should be considered the favorite over Casper Ruud and expected to advance.
Casper Ruud is the fifth seed here at the 2021 Mallorca Open, and is currently ranked a career-high #15 in the ATP world rankings. The Norwegia had a stellar clay court season this year and will be eyeing breaking into the top 10 as his next target, one that is within reach. Despite his outstanding form this year, he has traditionally struggled on grass but is talented enough to figure it out sooner rather than later. His aggressive groundstrokes are serious weapons on this surface but his biggest asset is always his movement. Ruud has been in good form so far at the 2021 Mallorca Open, defeating Gilles Simon and Tennys Sandgren without dropping a set. While he enters this match as the underdog, he will be backing himself against Daniil Medvedev who tends to struggle with movement on this surface.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head 1-0. The Russian won their only match last year at the ATP Cup, in straight sets. Both men have looked sharp so far here at the 2021 Mallorca Open despite grass not being their favorite surface. They will be hoping to continue their Wimbledon preparations and will be backing themselves to reach the Semi-Finals here. All things considered, I am going to go with Daniil Medvedev to get the close win here. His bigger serve should prove decisive here, and I think Ruud will struggle to break at times. It will be close and perhaps even go the distance, but the Russian will win and advance here in Mallorca.
