TennisSection previews the 2021 Vienna Open as Diego Schwartzman takes on Fabio Fognini in the Round of 32 on Wednesday, October 27th, 2021.
Will Fabio Fognini get a big win under his belt for his momentum and confidence as he has been lacking in form this year? Will Diego Schwartzman show us some more amazing tennis after his good week in Antwerp last week where he reached the Final? Both players are experienced and can win this match on their day, but only one will make their way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 Vienna Open. Who will it be?
Fabio Fognini has not been at his best in hard court conditions this year, losing most of his matches in the last few months in the first or second round of tournaments. A couple weeks ago he did put on a solid performance at Indian Wells where he meet Stefanos Tsitsipas and they played a 3-set thriller. However, Fognini came off as the loser in that match. Fabio is a great player on his day, having most shots in his arsenal, and he can switch the pace and direction of play easily. However, Fabio’s game is very mental, with the Italian being reliant on confidence and momentum. Can he cause the upset against Diego Schwartzman here at the 2021 Vienna Open as he aims to find some momentum?
Diego Schwartzman had a very solid week last week at the Antwerp Open, beating all of his opponents such as Andy Murray, Brandon Nakashima, and Jenson Brooksby, in straight sets to make his way to the Final. Diego was in great form but in the Final he was just not at good as he should have been when meeting an in form Jannik Sinner. Although he lost, Sinner should be very happy with his performances, and he will come into the 2021 Vienna Open hoping to continue this form as he now meets the flamboyant Fabio Fognini.
Diego Schwartzman and Fabio Fognini have met 2 times before, with the head to head tied at 1-1. They met lastly in 2017 here in Vienna where Diego won in 3 sets. Back then, Fabio was the more successful player and more in form player, but he still lost. Since then, Diego has become tougher and tougher to beat as he has developed his game for most surfaces. With his amazing week last week, and the sub-par performance from Fabio over the summer, I see the Argentine coming through this one easily and getting himself into the Round of 16 of the 2021 Vienna Open.
