TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Novak Djokovic takes on Matteo Berrettini in the Quarter-Finals on Wednesday, September 8th, 2021.
Will Novak Djokovic get another win over Matteo Berrettini for the 3rd Grand Slam running? Will Matteo Berrettini get revenge for his loss at the Wimbledon Final against Novak? We are in for a huge Quarter-Final here at the 2021 US Open, and this is going to be Djokovic’s biggest challenge this week. Who will make their way to the Semi-Finals of the 2021 US Open?
Matteo Berrettini came through a 4-set win against the in form fairytale run, Oscar Otte, beating the German qualifier 6-4/3-6/6-3/6-2. Matteo was strong in all aspects of his game throughout the match, winning 89% of first serves, and converting 4/5 break points. However, he was not at his best on his second serve, winning 53% of second serves. Berrettini was still able to dominate just on his first serve, but when he let his guard down slightly, Oscar made the most of it and stole a set. Matteo is one win away from reaching the same point he reached here at the US Open by getting into the Semi-Finals (where he went in 2019). However, this time he meets the title favourite here in New York in Novak Djokovic.
Novak Djokovic had to fight back from a set down against the local wildcard, Jenson Brooksby, beating the American in 4 sets 1-6/6-3/6-2/6-2. Jenson started off really well, taking all balls early and putting Novak under pressure. Once he got the first set under his belt, I believe Jenson took the task of beating Novak too lightly, expecting for the match to continue in that fashion. However, Novak is the king of comebacks and he destroyed the American easily in the next 3 sets. Novak will know he has lost a fair few sets here at the 2021 US Open against opponents you usually would not expect to lose against, which means he knows this is the year where he can get beat, especially against someone like Matteo Berrettini.
Novak Djokovic and Matteo Berrettini have met 3 times before, with Novak Djokovic leading the head to head 3-0. They met twice this year, at the French Open and Wimbledon (in the Final in Wimbledon). In both those matches, Matteo won a set against Novak and really took the game to Novak. However, Novak always found the stuff and got the wins in 4 sets. Here at the 2021 US Open, we are in Matteo Berrettini’s best territory I believe. Matteo plays at his best on hard courts because he gets more kick on his shots. If Matteo was able to get a set against Novak on both clay and grass, I believe that he can get 2 against Novak here in New York on hard. Novak will still come through in the end, as he always does, but he will lose a couple sets along the way as he has shown last week that he can lose sets to much lower ranked opponents.
