TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Aryna Sabalenka (2) faces Danielle Collins (26) in the Third Round on Friday September 3rd, 2021.
An entertaining match is expected here at the 2021 US Open as the second seeded Aryna Sabalenka meets American Danielle Collins for a spot in the Third Round. Will this be the year that the Belarusian finally breaks through and wins her first major? Or can the American cause the upset and get the win here?
Aryna Sabalenka is ranked at a career-high #2 in the WTA world rankings and is also the second seed here at the 2021 US Open. The Belarusian has not played much since her run to the Semi-Finals at Wimbledon, with mixed results. A Semi-Final showing at the Rogers Cup was followed by a First Round loss to Paula Badosa in Cincinnati, so she will have taken a blow to her confidence there. In the First Round she was surprisingly taken to three sets by the unheralded Nina Stojanic was followed by a straight sets demolition of Tamara Zidansek. She served very well and controlled the match with her huge groundstrokes. In this type of form she should be considered the heavy favorite and reach the Round of 16 at the 2021 US Open.
Danielle Collins is seeded #26 here at the 2021 US Open and is currently ranked #29 on the WTA Tour. The twenty-seven year old American has been in tremendous form lately, winning titles in Palermo and San Jose. She entered this event with a lot of confidence and it has shown, with straight-set victories over Carla Suarez Navarro and Kaja Juvan on her way to the Third Round where she will face the world number two player Aryna Sabalenka. Collins is the underdog here but in this type of form she should definitely not be discounted here. She is a very dangerous player when she is confident and she will be backing herself to cause the upset here in New York.
This will be the third meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour, with Sabalenka having a 2-0 lead in the head to head. The first time that they played was here at the US Open in 2018 where the Belarusian won in three tight sets. However, the second time was in Wuhan and this time Sabalenka won for the loss of only one game, and that will be weighing on the American’s mind here. I am expecting a much closer match this time around, but I am still backing Aryna Sabalenka to get the win here. She is very hit or miss but is looking confident at the moment, something that will mean trouble for the rest of the field. The world number two has too much firepower for her opponent Danielle Collins and once she can keep her unforced error count low she should win this match in two tough sets, advancing to the Round of 16 here at the 2021 US Open.
