Dan Evans will face Italian young gun Matteo Arnaldi for a spot in the round of 16 at the Barcelona Open. Who will prevail?
Dan Evans had a bye in the first round of the Barcelona Open, but that may not be a good thing after all given how well Matteo Arnaldi is playing right now. Evans has lost his last two matches on clay but did make the semifinal in Marrakech, Morocco, and he’s got a silky smooth backhand slice that can he uses to bully one-dimensional players. But he’ll face a stiff challenge against one of the fast-improving young players in the Challenger Tour.
Matteo Arnaldi shocked Jaume Munar on his own territory, beating the Spaniard 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the Barcelona Open. It was the 22-year-old’s second victory over a top 100 player. The match featured 21 break points, with Arnaldi accounting for five breaks, two more than Munar managed. He’ll certainly need to improve on his serve and cannot afford to give Evans too many chances on Wednesday.

Dan Evans and Matteo Arnaldi have not played each other on the ATP Tour, with this second-round match at the Barcelona Open being their first meeting. Arnaldi is young, vibrant, and highly talented. He’s been on a tear of late winning eight straight matches in April. Evans has a wealth of experience even though his record on clay is far from convincing. But he’s got the resources to play on any court and still perform. The Briton has won at least one set in each of his last five matches and the set handicap is too good to turn down here.
