TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Daniil Medvedev (2) meets Dominik Koepfer in the Second Round on Wednesday September 1st, 2021.
Daniil Medvedev is a man on a mission as he seeks to win his first ever Grand Slam title here at the 2021 US Open. The big Russian has come close before but is hoping to take it one step further. Next up in his path is the German Dominik Koepfer. Can he spoil the Russian’s dream and send him packing? Or will Medvedev continue his dominant form and advance to the Third Round?
Daniil Medvedev is the new world number two and he is seeded second here behind Novak Djokovic. Along with Djokovic, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev he is a major contender for the title here at the 2021 US Open and he is desperate for his first major. The Russian superstar has built some serious momentum heading into this event by winning the title at the Roger Cup and reached the Semis in Cincinnati. His all-court game is perfectly suited to the courts here in New York, and his ability to transition from defense to offense will be a handful for his opponent Dominik Koepfer, who is also likely a bit fatigued. Medvedev was dominant in his First Round win over French veteran Richard Gasquet, dropping only 8 games throughout the course of the match. If he continues in this form, Koepfer is not expected to have much of a chance and the Russian should cruise to victory here.
Dominik Koepfer is unseeded here at the 2021 US Open and is ranked #57 on the ATP Tour. The German was unexpectedly made to work hard in his First Round win over Quentin Halys, ranked a lowly #183 in the world. He had to fight back from two sets to one down, and wasted opportunities to win set 3. That type of wasteful tennis will not go unpunished against the number two seeded Daniil Medvedev, and Koepfer will know that he needs to be much improved to have any sort of chance of making this match respectable. He is the massive underdog here but is very highly experienced, and has had a fairytale run here at the US Open two years ago, so those memories will give him some hope here.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with the Russian leading the head to head 1-0. They played each other here in 2019 in the Round of 16, where Koepfer was up a set and a break before losing in four sets. It was his best performance at a major and he will be hoping for yet another miracle run like that one, but unfortunately that will not be the case. Daniil Medvedev has exploded over the past couple of seasons and is one of the best players in the world. Simply put, he is miles ahead of Dominik Koepfer and the score line will reflect that. I expect a straight set demolition here, as the Russian seems to be on cruise control here as he aims to go all the way at the 2021 US Open.
