TennisSection previews the 2021 US Open as Novak Djokovic takes on Holger Rune in the Round of 128 on Tuesday, August 31st, 2021.
Will Holger Rune get the biggest win of his career and shock us all as he aims to make a name for himself on the ATP Tour at 18 years old? Will Novak Djokovic come back after not having played since the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and dominate as we all expect him to do here at the 2021 US Open? This will be a very interesting encounter between two friends, and two different generations in the world of tennis. Who will make their way to the Round of 64 of the 2021 US Open?
Holger Rune has been in great form recently, winning the San Marino and Verona Challanger Tour tournaments back to back before entering qualifying here at the 2021 US Open where he won all 3 matches against experienced opponents. Holger is very happy with his form at the moment, but he knows he still has a way to go to become the level of player we all know he can achieve. Holger is definitely one of the stars of the future on the ATP Tour and he will have to come out here in this opening match with the mentality that he has nothing to lose and that he should just swing freely for the fences as he meets the toughest opponent you could meet in Novak Djokovic right from the start here at the 2021 US Open.
Novak is returning since he lost both the Semi-Final and Bronze Medal Final at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, focusing on his recovery and ensuring his body is ready to fight to the limit in search for the Calendar Grand Slam. Novak will know that he will have some rust in his game in the early rounds here at the 2021 US Open because of his time off, but he will know that he will find his rhythm easily and he will then be near-unstoppable as he always is. Novak is so determined to make history and win the calendar Grand Slam this year, but he knows he will face tough competition right from the start, with Holger Rune, and throughout the entire tournament here at the 2021 US Open.
Novak Djokovic and Holger Rune have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Although they have never played before, they are very good friends, training a lot in Monaco and exchanging messages on social media often. Novak has definitely helped Holger with some tips and he will know that Holger will come out here in this match ready to give it his all. Holger is a good player, but Novak is Novak. However, this does not meant that Holger cannot get something under his belt in this match. Novak has been away for a month, and he is always somewhat rusty in an opening match at a Grand Slam, as we saw with Jack Draper winning a set against him in the first round of Wimbledon. I expect a win for Novak as he enters the Round of 64 of the 2021 US Open, but Holger will steal one set in my opinion as he makes a bigger name for himself.
