TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Andy Murray meets Oscar Otte in the Second Round on Wednesday June 30th, 2021.
Local hero Sir Andy Murray will face Oscar Otte of Germany in the Second Round here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Both men were pushed to the limit in their First Round wins, with Otte going all the way to a fifth set tiebreaker, winning 13-12 in the fifth. Can he recover physically from that grueling encounter to push the Brit here? Or will former champion Murray advance as expected to the Third Round?
Andy Murray is currently ranked #118 on the ATP Tour and is a former world number one. A former champion here, Murray has struggled mightily over the past few seasons with severe injuries, and will have been delighted to get his first win here in four years. Murray will be kicking himself however after he let his opponent Nikolosz Basilashvili off the hook after being in total control, and ended up playing over an hour more than he should have. Despite this, he enters this next match against Germany’s Oscar Otte as the heavy favorite, and will be favored to advance to the Third Round here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
Oscar Otte is ranked #151 in the ATP world rankings, and is a Qualifier here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. After coming through the Qualifying Rounds the German was involved in a titanic battle in the First Round, defeating Arthur Rinderknech 13-12 in the fifth set. While he will have been happy to get the win, one must wonder how much he has left in the tank after that grueling match, and he will be up against it here against former world number one Andy Murray. Otte is a very solid player, but playing someone of Murray’s level is a whole different ball game and he enters this match as the massive underdog.
This will be the first meeting between the players on the ATP Tour, and it should be a relatively quick one. Oscar Otte has done well to get to this stage, but Andy Murray is beginning to show glimpses of his former self, and he will be a very tough opponent here. His experience is invaluable, and once healthy he has too much firepower for the German to handle. I expect Otte to put up a fight, but Andy Murray is finally looking like his former confident self, and it is very hard to see him losing here at home to a player ranked much below him. The Brit will win comfortably, advancing to the Third Round here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
