TennisSection previews the 2021 Cincinnati Open as John Isner takes on Benoit Paire in the Round of 16 on Thursday, August 19th, 2021.
Will John Isner make another impressive masters run? Will Benoit Paire continue to stun ust? This match will be an interesting one, where we will see if Paire can manage to win a 3rd match in a row, something he has not done this year. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Cincinnati Open?
John Isner just came off of a great week in Toronto, despite a very disappointing and rather surprising finish in the semifinals. Still, he played some of his best tennis today to come through Jannik Sinner 6-7 7-6 6-4. A very tight match as it often is with someone like Isner, but he played a solid match even managing to break him in the end of it. He’s going up against Benoit Paire, which is pretty surprising all things considered, but he should feel pretty confident going into it. While Paire has a solid serve himself and one of the best backhands on the ATP Tour, his returns aren’t that good so John shouldn’t worry too much about giving up too many points on serve. Benoit is also very inconsistent so you never know when he’ll play one bad game and lose his serve, however, assuming he stays consistent as he’s managed to do relatively well by his standards in his last two matches, I definitely expect at least one tiebreak and a lot of trouble for John to do much in Paire’s service games at the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
Benoit Paire is coming into this match when hardly anyone expected him to, considering his extreme inconsistenly and “tanking” after losing the first set. He has a pretty solid serve, so as long as he hits that normally he shouldn’t have too much trouble on serve. The problem for him is, he isn’t the best returner, especially on the forehand dealing with such enormous serving, as long as he can get some backhands to the corners I feel like he can create many opportunities for himself and consistently outplay John Isner from the back of the court. I think he should also consider going big on a lot of his shots, in which he would be able to finish points quickly and put the pressure on John, Paire has some pretty great hand skills, so if he’s able to reach some of Isner’s serves then he will have the opportunity to potentially grab hold of a point or two in the tiebreaks that will most likely happen. I think he has a solid shot here but it will most certainly be a tough one to try and make it to the quarterfinals of the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
Benoit Paire and John Isner have met once before, with the head to head being tied at 1-1. Their first match went the way of John Isner, however considering the fact that it was 10 years ago makes it rather redundant. Their most recent meeting however, which occurred just a couple years back on a court similar to this one, Benoit Paire took it in a tiebreak and a 6-3 set. This is a great sign for Benoit, because he seems to be playing back at the level he wants to and is looking especially mentally stable in his last couple of tournaments, particularly this one. As long as he can get hold of a few serves here and there and power some shots away from John whenever he can, I like his chances to take this one and move through to the quarterfinals of the 2021 Cincinnati Open.
