TennisSection previews the 2021 Swedish Open as Arthur Rinderknech meets Yannick Hanfmann in the Quarter-Finals on Friday July 16th, 2021.
A surprise Quarter-Final matchup is upon us here at the 2021 Swedish Open as Arthur Rinderknech of France will play German Yannick Hanfmann. Both men are unseeded here in Bastad and not many people would have expected either of them to reach this stage of the competition. Who will take it one step further and reach their first ATP Semi-Final?
Arthur Rinderknech is currently ranked #105 on the ATP Tour and entered this event by coming through the Qualifying Rounds here at the 2021 Swedish Open. The Frenchman is relatively inexperienced at this level, but has shown flashes of his quality throughout the year, most notably a Quarter-Final run in Lyon, where he defeated Jannik Sinner. He came through the Qualifying Rounds here without losing a set, had a comfortable win over Pedro Sousa in the First Round, and then defeated the tough John Millman in three sets to reach this stage. He should be considered the slight favorite here against Yannick Hanfmann, but there really isn’t much to separate the two players.
Yannick Hanfmann is also unseeded here at the 2021 Swedish Open, and is ranked just two spots below his opponent Arthur Rinderknech at #107 on the ATP Tour. The German enters this event in relatively poor form, having passed the Second Round just once in his past five tournaments. He has seemingly found form here in Bastad however, and has reached the Quarter-Finals without losing a set. Impressive wins over Thiago Monteiro and seventh seeded Jiri Vesely have brought him to this stage, and he has been serving extremely well. He will need tat to be clicking here against Rinderknech, as he does not quite have the firepower that the Frenchman does from the baseline. Hanfmann enters this match as the very slight underdog, but certainly has a chance here.
This will be their second meeting on the ATP Tour, and Arthur Rinderknech leads the head to head series 1-0. They played each other just a few weeks ago in Halle on Grass, with the Frenchman winning 7-5, 6-3. Since Yannick Hanfmann is more comfortable on clay than he is on grass I expect this match to be closer than their previous one, but with the same result. Rinderknech is playing some outstanding tennis at the moment, and I believe he will come away with a hard fought win here, advancing to his first ATP Semi-Final here at the 2021 Swedish Open.
