Federico Delbonis had a tough First Round match against the very unknown qualifier, Zhizhen Zhang, having to win the match in 3 sets 6-1/5-7/6-4. Federico Delbonis was very strong in the opening set, but he let his guard down thinking this would be an easy match once he won the first set, but Zhang had nothing to lose so he gave it his absolute best and was able to push it to a decider. Federico will not be able to do this again, and he will have to find the form he has played with all year, especially at Roland Garros, as he now meets a much tougher opponent on clay here at the 2021 Hamburg Open in Albert Ramos-Vinolas.
Albert Ramos-Vinolas has been in strong form this year on the ATP Tour, winning 18 matches and losing 14, higher than his usual win percentage. The real success of his year was winning his 3rd ATP Tour title at the Estoril Open. Albert is a very experienced player, having played nearly 500 ATP Tour matches throughout his career, and he is a clay expert. I am sure he will be confident in his ability to play well on clay some more this year, but he is coming up against someone who has had a lot of success against him in Federico Delbonis right from the start here at the 2021 Hamburg Open.
Albert Ramos-Vinolas and Federico Delbonis have met 11 times before, with Federico Delbonis leading the head to head 7-4. They most recently met at the Madrid Masters this year where Delbonis won in straight sets 7-6/6-3. They have always had tight matches, and I am sure this is going to be the exact same thing here at the 2021 Hamburg Open. Both of them are solid on clay, and they will know that if they’re at their best they will be very capable of winning. However, because Federico Delbonis has already gotten 1 match under his belt here at the 2021 Hamburg Open, I think he will be more prepared to get this win under his belt.
