TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Denis Shapovalov (10) meets Philipp Kohlschreiber in the First Round on Monday June 28th, 2021.
The talented lefty Denis Shapovalov will face the seasoned veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber in the First Round here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. This is a classic battle between youth and experience and is sure to be a very interesting match. The higher ranked Canadian is the obvious favorite on paper, but do not count out the experienced German as he is still capable of some fantastic tennis. Does he have enough in the tank at this stage in his career to cause the massive upset?
Denis Shapovalov is the 10th seed here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships and is currently ranked #12 on the ATP Tour. The talented young lefty has made major strides in his game over the past year and broke into the top 10 for the first time. While he has not had much success so far at Wimbledon, he has matured greatly since the tournament was last held and should have a much improved performance this year. The Canadian enters this event in relatively good form, reaching the Quarters in Stuttgart and Semis at Queens, and seems primed to make a deep run here at the All-England Club. The first obstacle in his path is the veteran German Philipp Kohlschreiber and it is a major challenge, despite the huge difference in their rankings.
Philipp Kohlschreiber is a former top 20 player who is now approaching the end of his career, and currently finds himself ranked outside the top 100 at #115. The German has been managing his workload in recent times to preserve his body, and has only played in three events so far this year, boasting a 4-3 record. While he enters this match against Denis Shapovalov as the massive underdog, he is a very experienced campaigner and is a former Quarter-Finalist here. He doesn’t have the same firepower and movement that he once did, but is still a very solid player, and Shapovalov will have to be very patient here, and wait for his spots to attack, something that he tends to struggle with. Kohlschreiber is very capable of giving the 10th seed a scare, and it will be interesting to see how this plays out.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and I expect it to be a very entertaining match. Denis Shapovalov is a very flashy and exciting player, and Philipp Kohlschreiber is also capable of some fantastic tennis. This looks like a comfortable victory for the Canadian on paper, but the German’s experience should not be taken lightly. I expect Shapovalov to get the win, but it will be a lot closer than the rankings may suggest. Kohlschreiber will likely win a set, but it is doubtful that he has enough left in him to get a win at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
