TennisSection previews the 2021 Toronto Open as Jenson Brooksby takes on Nikoloz Basilashvili in the Round of 64 on Tuesday, August 10th, 2021.
Will Jenson Brooksby follow up some good results as of late? Will Nikoloz Basilashvili get back into form? This match-up will serve for an interesting one, where we have a young talent going up against a player with one of the highest peak levels on the ATP Tour. Who will move on to the Round of 32 at the 2021 Toronto Open?
Jenson Brooksby has had a breakthrough year, having won a lot of matches as of late on the American hard court swing, making the finals of Newport and now making a great run at Washington, having reached the semi finals. Even still, this will be a hard match up for him, as he hasn’t really defeated one of the top players of the tour yet, despite causing many upsets. Nikoloz Basilashvili is probably as low as you can go at the moment for one of the top guys of the ATP Tour, so if he manages to beat him, we’ll know that Brooksby already has the potential to crack the top 40 very soon. He has an interesting game, with slightly unorthodox technique off both wings, but definitely a solid service game and a great tennis IQ. Let’s see if he has what it takes at the 2021 Toronto Open.
Nikoloz Basilashvili has had some pretty good results at the Olympics, losing a tight straight setter to eventual gold medalist Alexander Zverev in the third round. If he carries over that form, I do think he definitely is gonna be the guy to beat in this match. But it’s a big if, considering Basilashvili often peaks at different times, and when he does, it’s a joy to watch, however, it is inconsistent, and his average level can be rather disappointing for him at times. Still, it’s not like he spikes so inconsistently that he’ll lose all his form in a matter of weeks. I do think he should be able to power past Brooksby, but I will not at all be surprised if Jenson Brooksby pulls the upset at the 2021 Toronto Open.
Nikoloz Basilashvili and Jenson Brooksby have met once before, with Nikoloz Basilashvili leading the head to head 1-0. This was when Brooksby was only 18 years old, at the 2019 US Open, and he managed to take the first set off of him. Basilashivili has a solid serve, but it’s his incredibly powerful groundstrokes that do the trick for him, it’s a question of if Nikoloz is able to be aggressive with them, or if Brooksby is able to be more aggressive with his game. I think we’ll see a pretty aggressive match, where both players will try to hit many winners and pull each other off the court. I suspect a match that could have many ups and downs will happen between these two. It’ll be close, but Jenson Brooksby will get himself into the Roudn of 32 of the 2021 Toronto Open.
