TennisSection previews the 2021 Washington Open as Sebastian Korda (12) takes on Vasek Pospisil in the Round of 32 on Tuesday, August 3rd, 2021.
Will the experience and powerful game of Vasek Pospisil help him get a big win under his belt for the first time in a while as his main focus has been away from playing on court? Will Sebastian Korda continue to improve his game as he rises up the rankings and makes a name for himself? Both players are powerful and can win this match if they are at their best, but only one will make their way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 Washington Open. Who will it be?
Vasek Pospisil had to fight back from a set down against Emilio Gomez in the opening round, beating the Colombian in 3 sets 4-6/6-3/6-3. Vasek is no longer a young gun and his physical health is very important for his ability to play as he has had lots of issues over the years. Therefore, he cannot afford to play such long and tight matches so early on in tournaments as he needs to rest and recover for later rounds where he meets much tougher opponents, such as Sebastian Korda. Vasek definitely has the game to compete here but with his focus on ATP Tour policies, rather than playing every week, where will his head be at here at the 2021 Washington Open?
Sebastian Korda has been in great form this year, most recently reaching the Round of 16 of Wimbledon where he lost in an extremely tight 5-set match against Karen Khachanov. Sebastian Korda is making a name for himself, especially in the US as he seems to be one of the potential stars, if not the main star, for the future from America. Sebastian had a great all round game, and he has practiced over the weekend with the likes of Rafael Nadal, so you know he has gotten some strong preparation under his belt here as he now meets Vasek Pospisil at the 2021 Washington Open.
Sebastian Korda and Vasek Pospisil have met 1 time before, with Vasek Pospisil leading the head to head 1-0. They met in early 2019 in a Challenger Tour tournament, and Pospisil won in straight sets. Although Pospisil leads their head to head, since 2019 their forms have gone in opposite direction. Sebastian has become a mainstay in all tournaments on the ATP Tour, putting on some big performances and sometimes causing big upsets. Vasek shows up sometimes in tournaments and when he does he either loses first round or second round. Vasek is no longer mainly focused on improving his game, and he has fallen behind. Therefore, I see the up and coming Korda to continue making a name for himself as he makes his way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 Washington Open.
