TennisSection previews the 2021 Washington Open as Nick Kyrgios takes on Mackenzie McDonald in the Round of 64 on Tuesday, August 3rd, 2021.
Will Mackenzie McDonald pull off the upset and move on? Will Nick Kyrgios get back into winning form with a nice win here and be able to go all the way to defend his title? Monday’s match will make for an interesting one, as we have one of the most exciting players on tour, Nick Kyrgios, taking on a player who has been known to pull plenty of upsets. Who will move on to the Round of 32 at the 2021 Washington Open?
Nick Kyrgios has been playing pretty well for the most part this year, despite hardly playing at all and suffering an injury at Wimbledon. With what looked to be a very high level from Nick in his first-round match at the Atlanta Open, he suddenly dropped down a couple of notches and received a beatdown from Cam Norrie in the next round. Despite Norrie’s high level, it was definitely an unexpected result and raises eyebrows for this match and others in Nick’s recent future. Nick is most certainly not known for his mentality, so it will definitely be interesting to see how he’s able to regroup after his loss just a couple of days ago to be able to take on Mackenzie. I think he can do it, because his game works well against someone like McDonald, with big serving and lots of tricks and hyper-aggressive play. So even despite that recent loss and how it’ll affect his mental state, I doubt it would have that much of an impact on him to the point where he would lose this match at the 2021 Washington Open.
Mackenzie McDonald has not had great results on the tour as of late, having lost in the first round of his last 3 ATP tournaments. In order to defeat Kyrgios, he will have to not only hope that Kyrgios will be lacking in his game, but also to play much better than he has been. Serving will be a big part of the match from both sides, it will be very hard for Mackenzie to break Nick’s serve, so he will have to focus on his own serve, he won’t be getting a lot of free points off of it, so he’ll need to find good patterns to use against Nick within his service games, for instance taking advantage of any short balls he gets off Nick’s backhand, and instantly trying to pull him off the court and then putting him away. It’s definitely easier said than done though, and it will no doubt be a very tough match ahead of him.
Nick Kyrgios and Mackenzie McDonald have never met before, with this being their first career meeting. Even though they haven’t met before, this isn’t a great match up for Mackenzie, it’ll certainly be very hard for him all things considered. The only way I see this not going Nick’s way is if his poor results against Norrie affect him physically or mentally, or both. Although I don’t think they will, as despite Nick’s mental fragility, I don’t think he’d be the type of person to be that affected by a loss going into a new tournament, especially where he’s the title defender. Let’s see who will move on to the Round of 32 at the 2021 Washington Open.
