TennisSection previews the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as Novak Djokovic takes on Pablo Carreno Busta in the Bronze Medal Final on Saturday, July 31st, 2021.
Will Novak Djokovic get a tiny bit of redemption as he aims to leave the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with a medal? Will Pablo Carreno Busta hurt Djokovic even more after Alexander Zverev crushed his Golden Slam hopes on Friday? These players know each other quite well and we will see a great show on court, but only one will walk away as a Bronze medallist here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Who will it be?
Pablo Carreno Busta lost in shocking fashion against Karen Khachanov in the Semi-Finals, not even getting a set under his belt, losing in straight sets 3-6/3-6. Pablo was the favourite coming into that match because he had come from winning the Hamburg Open a couple weeks ago and he had also defeated Daniil Medvedev convincingly in the Quarter-Finals. However, it just was not Pablo’s day and he will have to ensure it does not affect his amazing game now that he enters this Bronze medal match against the one and only Novak Djokovic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Novak Djokovic just lost a match on a hard court in 2021, something that had not happened all year! Novak was seemingly in control of all matches he has played here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and it looked the same against Alexander Zverev when he was 1 set and 2-1 up in the second set up. Novak was in cruise control, but he seemed to get to comfortable thinking that he had the match in the bag, and Zverev began hitting much harder balls, and by that point Novak did not have the capacity to raise his level back to what it needed to be. Novak lost in 3 sets 6-1/3-6/1-6 and he will be very unhappy with this, as he also showed on court, because it has now stopped his chance at a Gold medal and the Golden Slam. Now, Novak will only be able to get the Bronze medal if he beats Pablo Carreno Busta.
Novak Djokovic and Pablo Carreno Busta have met 5 times before, with Novak Djokovic leading the head to head 4-1. The only time Pablo ‘won’ was because Novak got disqualified during their match at the US Open in 2020 for hitting a ball at a line judge. Pablo does not like Novak it is clear from his prior comments of Novak faking injuries during tight matches. This means this match is going to be tense because both players will be swinging for the fences. If Pablo had kept his match against Khachanov a bit tighter and fought until the end, I would believe he would have stood a chance of taking a set here, but he didn’t and I think Novak does not want to waste much time on court as he aims to get the Bronze medal. Novak will use the fire and anger from his loss in the Semi-Finals of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics to come out here and dominate in this Bronze Medal Final.
