TennisSection previews the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as Novak Djokovic takes on Alexander Zverev in the Semi-Finals on Friday, July 30th, 2021.
Will Novak Djokovic continue building on all of his impressive wins this week in Tokyo as he aims to get only one-step away from his dream of a Gold medal? Will Alexander Zverev bring out his absolute best tennis which we know he can do against the best in the world and cause the upset? Both players can win this match if they are at their best, but only one will make their way to the Final here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Who will it be?
Alexander Zverev put on a solid performance in the Quarter-Finals, beating the experienced Frenchman, Jeremy Chardy, in straight sets, 6-4/6-1. Alexander Zverev has definitely improved his serve as he is making less and less double faults, allowing him to dominate against opponents. Alexander knows that he can definitely get to the Final here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, but he will need to ensure he is at his best and does not let his guard down in all aspects of his game as he meets an opponent who is so hard to break down in Novak Djokovic.
Novak Djokovic cruised through his Quarter-Final match against the last remaining local hero, Kei Nishikori, beating the Rio 2016 Bronze medallist in straight sets, 6-2/6-0. Kei was playing well throughout the match, but the fact that Novak is just so quick around the court meant that he was returning absolutely everything and making Kei go for shots too close to the lines which caused errors. Novak Djokovic will know he has been in top form this week and he is the favourite for the Gold medal, but he’s been in this position before at the Olympics and still lost. Can he prevent Alexander Zverev from causing the upset here?
Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev have met 8 times before, with Novak Djokovic leading the head to head 6-2. Their matches have always been extremely tight and they met 2 times this year, both matches where in my opinion, Zverev was the better player and he should have won them. Zverev always brings out his best against the top guys, as he loves to play against them. However, when he is ahead in matches against Djokovic, he seems to get tight when he could win them. Alexander can definitely get a set under his belt here, but I think Novak will edge through this one as he did in their last 2 meetings. Novak will finally give himself a chance at Gold here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
