Roberto always seems to start the year off extremely well and if he continues to play like he did in his first match, Team Spain will have a good time here. Roberto is great at everything, having a solid game all round. The Spaniard will know that he can rally for hours in these conditions and he can wear down most opponents. However, he meets a top 10 player in Casper Ruud now, so will he have enough to beat him?
Casper Ruud also got a win in his first match here at the 2022 ATP Cup, beating Dusan Lajovic in 2 tight sets 6-3 7-5. Casper seemed to be in cruise control of the match at times, but he was not able to keep the lead most of the time, with Dusan breaking back. Casper has evolved into an all court player over the last few months, showing us that he can play well outside of clay courts. However, he still has some room to grow in terms of his rallying ability in these hard court conditions. Will the Norwegian be able to get something going as he now meets a tough rallier in Roberto Bautista Agut?

However, since then, Casper has improved drastically and was one of the best players on the ATP Tour in 2021, winning 57 matches and winning 5 titles. On paper, everything goes in Ruud’s favour because of his ranking, his performances in 2021, and the fact that he beat the likes of Andrey Rublev at the 2021 ATP Finals. However, after having watched both players’ opening match, Roberto seems to be ready to go here and the conditions suit him a bit more. Every year Roberto Bautista Agut comes out in strong fashion here, and I think he will know how to wear down Casper Ruud and get a point for Team Spain at the 2022 ATP Cup.
