TennisSection previews the 2021 Atlanta Open as Cameron Norrie (3) meets Nick Kyrgios in the Round of 16 on Thursday July 29th.
A hugely exciting match is expected as the flamboyant Nick Kyrgios faces the in-form Cameron Norrie for a spot in the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Atlanta Open. There is also drama and flair whenever the explosive Aussie takes the court, and he is coming up against Norrie who is in career-best form, having just won his first title on the ATP Tour. The only thing to expect when Kyrgios plays is the unexpected, can he win here and advance to the Quarter-Finals?
Cameron Norrie is currently ranked a career-high #29 on the ATP Tour, and has been in scintillating form recently. The 25 year old Brit claimed his first ATP title at the Los Cabos Open last week, and his confidence will be sky high after that result and the great year that he has had. Even more impressive was the manner that he crushed the field last week, not losing a set en route to the title, and hardly even being pushed. Seeded third here at the 2021 Atlanta Open he has been handed a difficult draw against Nick Kyrgios who can be one of the best players in the world on a good day. It is never easy to predict what the Aussie will do, so while Norrie is considered the favorite here, anything can happen.
Nick Kyrgios is unseeded here at the 2021 Atlanta Open and is currently ranked #58 on the ATP Tour. The talented Aussie has seen his ranking slide since the start of the pandemic as he has hardly participated on Tour. This is only his fourth tournament of the year and the fact that he is still able to compete at a high level speaks volumes about his talent. He has been handed a tough draw here in Atlanta, having to overcome former top 5 player Kevin Anderson in the First Round before meeting Cameron Norrie, who has been having an outstanding season this year, reaching four Finals and winning one. Kyrgios is capable of beating anyone in the world “when he feels like it” but the trouble is always knowing when the good performances will happen. He must be considered the underdog here but certainly is capable of winning if he plays well.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with the head to head being tied at 1-1. Cameron Norrie claimed the first meeting back in 2018 but Kyrgios crushed him 6-2, 6-2 last year at the ATP Cup. It is always an impossible task to predict what will happen during a Kyrgios match, so this match is probably best avoided by punters. All things considered, I am going with the Aussie to win here despite Norrie’s fantastic form. He simply has too much firepower for most players to handle, and he seems to have matured in recent times. Norrie is a very solid player but his path to victory depends on Kyrgios committing a lot of errors as he does not have the ability to hit through his opponent. The shortened schedule that the Aussie is playing has seemingly done wonders for his focus and mental state, and I am expecting a dominant win here. Nick Kyrgios will win in straight sets, advancing to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Atlanta Open.
