Will Marin Cilic get the win? Will Filip Krajinovic pull off the upset? This will be a fascinating one, where we have two players coming off some solid wins clashing deeper in the tournament. Who will triumph and move on to the quarterfinals at the 2022 Rome Masters?
Marin Cilic took down Cameron Norrie in an interesting scoreline in 5-7 6-2 6-1, dominating him after dropping the first set. Based on results as of late you’d pin Cilic as the favorite, but Garin is a great clay courter and there’s no better surface for him than a slow clay court. Cilic likes faster courts better, but with his current form and the win he got over Norrie, I expect him to get the win for a place in the quarterfinals at the 2022 Rome Masters.
Cristian Garin took down Ruusuvuori 6-4 6-4, a solid win for a solid clay courter. Heading into this one against Cilic though, I see little chance for the Chilean matchup wise. Cilic is a very aggressive player, while Garin is very conservative and defines what a clay court specialist is. I expect Cilic to take down Garin in a somewhat contested, but in the end convincing victory for a spot in the quarterfinals at the 2022 Rome Masters.
Marin Cilic and Cristian Garin have met twice before, with Marin Cilic leading the head to head 2-0. Furthering my point in terms of the matchup, Cilic leads 2-0, they didn’t play on clay, but it’s still evident that Cilic knows what he’s doing here and is no doubt filled with confidence heading into this one. It may be tougher to go much further, but I expect Cilic to take this one and progress at the 2022 Rome Masters.
