TennisSection previews the 2021 Austria Open as Filip Krajinovic (3) meets Carlos Taberner in the Round of 16 on Wednesday July 28th, 2021.
Third seeded Serbian Filip Krajinovic will face Lucky Loser Carlos Taberner for a spot in the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Austria Open held in Kitzbuhel. Krajinovic is ranked much higher than his opponent but has been in poor form lately and will be hoping to reverse that with a good showing here. The Spaniard showed tremendous fight during the Qualifying Rounds but is now facing his sternest test yet. Can he play the match of his life and come away with the upset?
Filip Krajinovic is currently ranked #33 on the ATP Tour and is the third seed here at the 2021 Austria Open in Kitzbuhel. After disappointing performances at both the French Open and Wimbledon he has found some form, reaching the Final at the German Open and the Quarters in Umag. He has a great opportunity here to go on a deep run as the draw is in his favor, and he enters this Round of 16 match as the massive favorite over Carlos Taberner. He has the advantage in almost every category in addition to having much more experience. It would truly be a huge shock if this result was anything else but a comfortable win for the Serbian, but stranger things have happened.
Carlos Taberner entered the 2021 Austria Open as a Lucky Loser, and is ranked #108 on the ATP Tour. The 23 year old Spaniard has been in good form lately, reaching the Round of 16 at both the German Open and Umag and his confidence will be at an all time high. He received some good fortune here in Kitzbuhel, losing in the final round of Qualifying but receiving a Lucky Loser spot. He made the most of it by defeating the talented Thiago Seyboth Wild in the First Round and will look to cause the massive upset here. He enters as the big underdog against Filip Krajinovic, but the Serbian has been known to lose matches that he shouldn’t, so there is some hope for the Spaniard here.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, and the head to head stands at 0-0. Carlos Taberner has been very impressive over the past few weeks, but I do think that he is a little bit out of his depth here. He is still relatively inexperienced, and I don’t think that he has the tools to compete with an opponent like Filip Krajinovic yet. The Serbian is a fantastic player but is prone to some lapses in concentration, so it may not be all one way traffic. However, I do expect him to figure it out and win this match relatively comfortably, advancing to a third successive Quarter-Final on the ATP Tour here at the 2021 Austria Open.
