TennisSection previews the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as Marin Cilic takes on Pablo Carreno Busta in the Round of 32 on Monday, July 26th, 2021.
Will Marin Cilic show us his amazing tennis of old on hard courts as he aims to complete his tennis cabinet with an Olympic medal? Will Pablo Carreno Busta continue improving on his game as he brings the momentum he gained by winning the Hamburg Open just a couple weeks ago? Both players are experienced and can win this match at their best, but only one will make their way to the Round of 16 of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Who will it be?
Pablo Carreno Busta put on a solid performance in the first round, beating Tennys Sandgren in straight sets 7-5/6-2 to make his way to the second round. Pablo is such a strong player on all surfaced as his game is adaptable to be a serve and volley game, a long and draining rallies on the baseline game, or even just powerhitting. Pablo Carreno Busta will know that he is probably Spain’s best chance of getting far in the tennis here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, but he will need to ensure he is ready for a tough battle against a former Grand Slam Champion in Marin Cilic.
Marin Cilic came back from a set down in a tight match against Joao Menezes in the first round, beating him in 3 sets 6-7/7-5/7-6. Marin Cilic is solid when he is at his best but that first round match was much tighter than it should have been and it hasn’t given me much confidence in his game at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Marin Cilic still has his best tennis as he was able to win the Stuttgart Open a couple months ago. Marin Cilic has a powerhitting game, aiming to win the points quite quickly. However, he will need to show variation as he meets the always tough Pablo Carreno Busta.
Marin Cilic and Pablo Carreno Busta have met 4 times before, with Marin Cilic leading the head to head 4-0. Marin Cilic has always had the upper hand over Pablo Carreno Busta but they have not met since 2018. Since 2018, Pablo Carreno Busta has improved drastically whilst Marin has somewhat withered. I still expect a tight match because Marin knows he has a good head to head, but Pablo Carreno Busta will wear him down in long rallies from the baseline. Marin will definitely try and keep things close by taking the sets to tiebreaks, but Pablo will win and make his way to the Round of 16 of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
