TennisSection previews the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as Aslan Karatsev takes on Jeremy Chardy in the Round of 32 on Tuesday, July 27th, 2021.
Will Jeremy Chardy be able to get another win over Aslan Karatsev this year as he aims to stop the Russian’s success? Will Aslan Karatsev show us his amazing hard court game which was what made a name for him earlier this year? Both players can win this match if they are at their best, but only one will make their way to the Round of 16 of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Jeremy Chardy came through an up and down match against Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera in the first round, winning in straight sets 6-1/7-6. The first set was an absolute domination by Jeremy, but in the second set the match was much tighter and Jeremy had to use all of his experience to get the win under his belt. Jeremy Chardy will know that he cannot play as he did in that second set, especially as he now meets Aslan Karatsev, and he needs to ensure he can come out dominating as he did in the first set.
Aslan Karatsev cruised through his first round match, beating the always tough Tommy Paul here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in straight sets 6-3/6-2. Aslan Karatsev showed us a very strong base of tennis to build on now that he is back on his favourite surface. Aslan is so good in these conditions and he showed us this year that he can make it far in Grand Slams, win ATP 500 tournaments, and beat the likes of Novak Djokovic. However, Aslan now meets Jeremy Chardy who recently beat him just last month. Can the Russian get revenge?
Aslan Karatsev and Jeremy Chardy have met 2 times before, with Jeremy Chardy leading the head to head 2-0. They recently met las month in Wimbledon where Chardy won in straight sets. However, that match was on grass and Aslan has never played on grass as this was his first year on the ATP Tour as a mainstay. Aslan is much more of a dangerous beast in these hard court conditions and he will put so much speed and power through his shots, that even Chardy won’t be able to handle it. It might be tight just because of their prior matches, but Aslan will show us why he is in the top 25 in the world after just half a year as a mainstay on the ATP Tour. Karatsev will make his way to the Round of 16 here at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
