TennisSection previews the 2021 St Petersburg Open as Taylor Fritz takes on Jan-Lennard Struff in the semifinals on Saturday, October 30th, 2021.
Will Taylor Fritz get the win? Will Jan-Lennard Struff pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a tight matchup with players with huge games. Who will move on to the final at the 2021 St Petersburg Open?
Taylor Fritz has been beaming through the competition so far, not dropping a set. It won’t be easy though coming up against Jan-Lennard Struff. Fritz matches up pretty evenly with Struff, they both have huge games and are ready to stand on the baseline and pound the ball as hard as possible. Fritz is definitely the favorite, as is indicative based on his results as of late, primarily at Indian Wells where he reached the semifinals. Struff on the other hand, hasn’t been playing too well, struggling to win a match tournament to tournament. For that main reason, it’s a safe bet to go with Fritz as the two fight for a spot in the final at the 2021 St Petersburg Open.
Jan-Lennard Struff got a fantastic win over Denis Shapovalov to set up yet another tough meeting with Taylor Fritz. He does have a shot at the upset, as he’s been serving huge and his game is great for a quick court like this. However, Fritz not only has more versatility in his game, but his results lately also prove to be much more indicative of his level of play, considering the deep run he just made at Indian Wells. If Struff wants to get past him, he will have to focus on playing first strike tennis, and not trying to allow the rallies to elongate, which will inevitably give Fritz the edge as they clash for a place in the last two at the 2021 St Petersburg Open.
Taylor Fritz and Jan-Lennard Struff have met once before, with Jan-Lennard Struff leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came at the 2019 Wimbledon Championships, with Struff winning in 4 sets. Fritz wasn’t playing as good then as he is now, and Struff is playing worse than he was then. Still, it proves that Struff can definitely upset Fritz, the thing is, on a quick hard court like this, it’s less about the serving and more about how well you can take the ball early and whether or not you can consistently be aggressive in long rallies. Both of those things favor Fritz heavily, so he’ll likely clinch it out over Struff as the two battle for a spot in the final at the 2021 St Petersburg Open.
