TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Dan Evans takes on David Goffin in the Round of 128 on Tuesday, January 18th, 2021.
Will Dan Evans get the win? Will David Goffin pull off the upset? This will be an interesting one, where we have a tight matchup with a talented Brit taking on a recovering former top ATP player. Who will move on to the Round of 64 at the 2022 Australian Open?
Dan Evans has been playing some great tennis down under, losing a very tight contest to Aslan Karatsev at the Sydney Open. He now has a great opportunity in front of him to reach the Round of 64 at the 2022 Australian Open as he comes up against David Goffin. While Goffin has gotten better, he still is struggling with an injury and just will not be able to pose much of a challenge to the match-ready and injury-free Evans as the two clash for a place in the next round.
David Goffin got off to a decent start down under, winning two matches before having to retire against Andy Murray mid-match. That wasn’t a great sign for him, and I definitely don’t think he can push a player of the quality of Dan Evans in his condition. Goffin can play a dangerous game, but he’s just been struggling for too long and cannot compete with Evans without more recovery time. Let’s see if he can push the top Brit as he aims to be competitive for a place in the Round of 64 here at the 2022 Australian Open.
Dan Evans and David Goffin have met twice before, with Dan Evans leading the head to head 2-0. The two have met twice before in 2020 and 2021. Evans won both times, once at the ATP Cup 2 years ago and once last year on the clay of Monte Carlo. Goffin has been struggling for a long time, dating back all the way across these two matches, if Evans has been able to figure him out then, then I do not think he will encounter too much resistance here. However, Goffin did manage to play pretty well, and Evans isn’t the most consistent player, so I think Evans will likely get past him in four sets as he aims to move on to the second round at the 2022 Australian Open.
