Second seeded American John Isner begins his 2021 Los Cabos Open campaign with a Round of 16 encounter against unseeded Russian Evgeny Donskoy. Both men have been in relatively poor form lately and will be hoping to find some form here. Can the Russian cause the massive upset and send the second seed packing?
John Isner is ranked #39 on the ATP Tour and is the second seed here at the 2021 Los Cabos Open. The big serving American is approaching the end of his long and successful career, but is still a very capable player, especially on his favored hard courts. The American will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing Wimbledon campaign where he lost in the First Round to Yoshihito Nishioka. Despite being the second seed, Isner is the favorite to take the title here in Mexico, and will be backing himself to get off to a strong start against Round of 16 opponent Evgeny Donskoy.
Evgeny Donskoy is unseeded here at the 2021 Los Cabos Open, and is ranked #157 on the ATP Tour. The Russian veteran was once ranked as high as #65 in the world but now mainly plies his trade on the Challenger Tour. Donskoy enters this event in poor form, having lost either in the First Round or Qualifying Rounds in his past three events, and will be desperate to find some form here in Mexico. Unfortunately for him, he was drawn against one of the main contenders for the title in John Isner, and will enter this match as the massive underdog. Surprisingly he does have a win over the big American, but that came over eight years ago and should not be factored in when predicting this match.
This will be the third meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with the head to head being tied 1-1. This is a straightforward match to call, and there will be no other result other than a comfortable win for John Isner. Despite him being on the decline lately he is still a much better player than his opponent Evgeny Donskoy at this stage in their careers, and his serve is still one of the elite weapons on the tour. This will be one way traffic, and John Isner will book his Quarter-Final spot here at the 2021 Los Cabos Open in convincing fashion.
