TennisSection previews the 2022 ATP Cup as Alexander Zverev meets Cameron Norrie on Sunday January 2nd, 2022 at 3:50am EST.
The tie between Germany and Great Britain is poised to be an exciting and very close one, with both teams full of quality. World number three Alexander Zverev will face Cameron Norrie, one of the breakout stars of the 2021 season here at the 2022 ATP Cup. Zverev is the big favorite here as he is one of the best players in the world but Norrie showed that he is capable of some world-class tennis this year. Can he cause the upset here in Sydney?
Alexander Zverev is ranked number three in the world and he considered to be one of the best and biggest stars on the ATP Tour. The German has been incredibly consistent over the past few years but is still seeking that elusive maiden Grand Slam titles. The concentration issues that he had at the beginning of his career are long gone and it seems like a matter of when not if he finally clears that hurdle. He will be hoping to get some crucial match practice in here ahead of the Australian Open, and he generally performs well in team events like the 2022 ATP Cup. His huge serve and groundstrokes are very well suited to these courts and conditions and he is the big favorite to win here against Cameron Norrie. However, he should not underestimate the British number one as he had a breakout season in 2021 and has proven himself in a big way.
Cameron Norrie is the British number one player and is currently ranked #12 on the ATP Tour. The gritty lefty had a huge breakout season in 2021, winning a pair of titles and his maiden Masters-1000 title at Indian Wells in a stunning performance that no-one could have predicted. What he lacks in power he makes up for in his anticipation and movement, grinding players down and forcing them into errors. His opponent Alexander Zverev has been known to be impatient at times, so Norrie is exactly the type of player that can frustrate him easily. Make no mistake, Zverev is the huge favorite but the Brit has shown that he belongs at the top and can hang with the “big boys”. This 2022 ATP match is poised to be very interesting, and it remains to be seen how they both look after the break.
This is a very tough first match for Alexander Zverev at the 2022 ATP Cup, but it is a test that I expect him to pass with flying colors. The German has been incredibly consistent and I am expecting a very big year for him in 2022, and he will compete for major titles all season. Cameron Norrie has been much improved and his confidence will be at an all-time high, but it is unlikely that he will have the firepower to trouble the big German here in Sydney, and will lose in straight sets. This is their third meeting on the ATP Tour, and I expect alexander Zverev to extend his lead in the head to head 3-0.
