TennisSection previews the 2021 Hamburg Open as Pablo Carreno Busta (2) meets Dusan Lajovic (5) in the Quarter-Finals on Friday, July 16th 2021.
Will Dusan Lajovic continue improving his game as he aims to find the form we all know he can play with on clay courts? Will Pablo Carreno Busta continue improving on his solid win here in the Second Round as he aims to make it one step closer to the title? Both players are experienced and have great clay games, but only one will make their way to the Semi-Finals of the 2021 Hamburg Open. Who will it be?
Dusan Lajovic came through a very tight 3-set match against the qualifier, Alex Molcan, in the Second Round, beating him 6-4/6-7/6-3. Alex Molcan is quite unknown but he did make his breakthrough earlier this year at the Serbia Open 2 as he reached the Semi-Finals as a qualifier and played well against Novak Djokovic. Dusan Lajovic should have really won the match in straight sets, but it is not a shock that he did not. Now, Dusan meets a much tougher opponent on clay in Pablo Carreno Busta here at the 2021 Hamburg Open, and he will need to bring out his A-game.
Pablo Carreno Busta put on a solid display in his first match on clay in over a month, beating his fellow Spaniard and qualifier, Carlos Taberner, in straight sets 7-5/6-3. Pablo Carreno Busta has been in superb form all year, and even last year where he reached the Semi-Finals of the US Open. Pablo will know that if he is at his best, which means playing long rallies from the baseline, not being afraid of coming in, and hitting his first serve well, he will have a very strong chance of making it to the Final, if not lifting the title. However, he meets an experienced opponent in Dusan Lajovic and he will need to be ready to go.
Pablo Carreno Busta and Dusan Lajovic have met 6 times before, with Pablo Carreno Busta leading the head to head 4-2. They have met 4 times on clay, and their head to head there is 2-2 and they have always played 3 set matches on clay. However, they have not played on clay since 2015, and I think that Pablo has shown great form this year on clay, winning a title along the way and continuously showing that he is one of the most consistent guys on the ATP Tour. Dusan can definitely keep things tight, but the Spaniard has the edge when it comes to longer rallies, and on clay this is vital. Pablo will make his way to the Semi-Finals of the 2021 Hamburg Open.
