TennisSection previews the 2022 Australian Open as Alexander Zverev takes on John Millman in the second round on Wednesday, January 19th, 2022.
The jury is still out on whether Alexander Zverev has what it takes to win his first Grand Slam at the Australian Open. Even in the absence of Novak Djokovic, Zverev is still not the favorite to take home the big prize in a fortnight’s time. But he is a contender. Can he advance past Australia’s John Millman on Wednesday?
Alexander Zverev brushed off the challenge of countryman Daniel Altmaier in the first round, but it wasn’t as straightforward as expected. Zverev was pushed to two tiebreak sets, and needed to recover from a break down in the third to win 7-6 6-1 7-6 in over two and half hours. And he admitted in his post-match interview that nothing went to plan, except he won the match. Winning ugly is sometimes a true mark of a champion. But the fact that Zverev managed to crunch 53 winners in a three sets, clearly illustrated it wasn’t all ugly. Next up he will face crowd favorite John Millman.
John Millman was mired in his very own battle on Margaret Court Arena, but he managed to come out on top in a four-set win over Feliciano Lopez. On a day when two high-flying Aussies fell to surprise defeats, Millman joined Aleksandar Vukic in the second round after taking almost three hours to outlast 40-year-old Lopez. The Spanish veteran’s serve malfunctioned badly in the first two sets. And although he recovered to win the third set, Millman’s athleticism proved to be the difference as the match entered its third hour. The Australian World No. 89 has now advanced into the second round of the Australian Open for the fifth time, where Alexander Zverev awaits.
Alexander Zverev leads John Millman 2-0 in their head-to-head. The German is odds-on to keep his 100% winning record over the Aussie. Zverev is among the elite players who can outmuscle Millman from the back of the court. Barring an unforeseen collapse, the third seed should easily account for the tireless Australian.
