World number one and top seed Novak Djokovic will face seventeenth seeded Cristian Garin in the Round of 16 here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Garin has proven himself to be a very big threat to the top players on clay, but hasn’t yet translated that success onto the quicker surfaces. While he has largely struggled so far at Wimbledon, he remains a very talented player and should not be underestimated. Can he cause one of the biggest shocks of the year and cause the upset?
Novak Djokovic is a legend of the game, and is considered to be one of the greatest players in history. The five time Wimbledon Champion is seeking to equal the Grand Slam record held by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, something that he can achieve by winning the title here. He has largely been in dominant form so far here at the All-England Club, dropping just one set en route to the Round of 16. He cruised past Dennis Kudla in his last match, controlling the match from start to finish and giving the experienced American no chance. Djokovic has been serving extremely well here at Wimbledon, and that along with his return game and elite movement make him the heavy favorite here against Cristian Garin, who is still learning the ropes on this surface.
Cristian Garin is ranked #20 on the ATP Tour, and is the seventeenth seed here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The Chilean has established himself as a top player on the Tour, but has found the going tough so far here, dropping at least one set in each of his three matches. After struggling in his first matches against Zapata Miralles and Polmans, he seems more comfortable against Pedro Martinez, but still dropped the third set to his opponent, who is also considered a clay court specialist. While he will be happy that he has found a way to win each time, this is a whole different ball-game against the world number one Novak Djokovic, and he will have to be much improved if he is to make this match competitive.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour, with Djokovic leading the head to head series 1-0. The Serbian won their only match last year at the ATP Cup 6-3, 6-3. While Cristian Garin has improved leaps and bounds over the past few seasons and is a very accomplished player, I see this result being similarly as comfortable. Novak Djokovic is a five time champion here, and is one of the best grass-court players in history. Garin will be no match for him as he is still figuring out how to move on this surface, and really is not comfortable at all. I expect yet another dominant performance from the Serbian star, and he will advance to the Quarter-Finals here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships with ease.
