TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Iga Swiatek takes on Ons Jabeur in the Round of 16 on Monday, July 5th 2021.
Will Iga Swiatek go all the way and prove she can be a dominant force on every surface? Will Ons Jabeur pull off the upset? Monday’s contest promises to be an interesting one, because if Swiatek is able to pull this win off easily, she may very well be a top contender for the title. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships?
Iga Swiatek has been having a great tournament, showing she’s no one trick pony and can play on the grass just as well. She’s been putting on an excellent display on serve, but could very well lose to Jabeur. I wouldn’t put either player as the favorite here, and I really do think it could go either way. Swiateks opponents weren’t the strong, est and Ons took out the former champion and a title contender. She will need to stay super focused on making sure she doesn’t get broken, and she’ll need to try and dictate like she does on a clay court, she won’t be able to play much defense unless needed, or she’ll lose. I do think she can win but I wouldn’t necessarily bet on it.
Ons Jabeur took out the 2017 champion in Muguruza to reach the fourth round. She has been in supreme form, and I might have to guess that she would win the match just based on her quality today. However, Swiatek had a extremely convincing performance in her third round match, so she won’t be tired. Like mentioned earlier, it could go either way but Jabeur may be a safer pick just because of who she beat and how she did it. A reason that I wouldn’t want to bet on her though would be her break point conversion rate, a very shocking 5/29. That is a ridiculously low rate, and if she wants to win which she is capable of, she will need to get that way higher. I believe she can do it, but it will take a lot of mental focus and relaxtion. Her level is good enough, but those important points are the only thing she needs to improve.
Iga Swiatek and Ons Jabeur have played once before, with Iga Swiatek leading the head to head 1-0. Iga Swiatek won in three sets at the Washington Open in 2019, this match doesn’t indicate much, but since it was relatively recent, both players should now each other and should have a plan going in to this one. Jabuer will need to play well in the big moments, and Swiatek will have to stay really solid on serve, both things much easier said than done. I expect a good contest, and it will certainly be interesting to see who can come out on top.
