Novak Djokovic got a great win over FAA, taking him out 7-5 7-6 (1). Djokovic played a brilliant match, really using FAA’s pace and defending brilliantly, but also creating many of his own opportunities and really using the aggressive nature of his forehand. Casper Ruud will not be easy, he’s incredibly consistent and if he serves well, he’s difficult to beat. Djokovic though I think is way too challenging of a matchup for Ruud’s style, backhand to backhand Ruud simply can’t overpower him and Djokovic will jump all over the 2nd serve if it isn’t perfect. Let’s see what the best player in the world has in store as he aims to get win #1000 and secure a place in the final clash of the 2022 Rome Masters.
Casper Ruud got a tough win over Denis Shapovalov, interestingly also winning his 2 sets 7-5 and 7-6. Shapovalov was coming off a great win and really playing some solid tennis, but Ruud showed why he’s one of the top guys not just on the ATP Tour, but specifically on this surface. I think he’s built a lot of confidence for the French Open this week already, but to push Djokovic would be another level. Ruud has a shot here if he can be very assertive with the forehand, as Djokovic struggled with Alcaraz who wasn’t scared to rip the forehand. Alcaraz though also wasn’t fazed backhand to backhand, Ruud will have to make up ground for any weaknesses on that wing and really run around to hit as many forehands as possible if he wants a shot at the final at the 2022 Rome Masters.
Novak Djokovic and Casper Ruud have met twice before, with Novak Djokovic leading the head to head 2-0. Looking at their history, Djokovic has taken him out here in Rome before a couple of years ago at the same stage, as well as at the ATP Finals last year in Turin. I think Ruud definitely has the potential to turn this one into a blockbuster, but he’ll have to work extra hard as the World No. 1 aims to build up even more confidence as he seeks to lift a 6th title in Rome and assert himself as the guy to pick to defend his title at the French Open. Let’s see what he can do to book his spot in the final at the 2022 Rome Masters.
