TennisSection previews the 2021 Moselle Open as Lorenzo Sonego (5) faces Marton Fucsovics in the First Round on Monday September 20th, 2021.
A very interesting First Round matchup is upon us at the 2021 Moselle Open in Metz, France as Lorenzo Sonego and Marton Fucsovics do battle. Both men are in the top 50 and have had strong seasons so far, setting the stage for a very close and entertaining match. Who will get the win and advance to the Second Round?
Lorenzo Sonego is the fifth seed here at the 2021 Moselle Open and is currently ranked #24 on the ATP Tour. The 26 year old Italian has come out of nowhere lately, and has had some very strong performances over the past couple years, establishing himself as a true emerging talent. After some good results to start the year he has been in rather inconsistent form, notably reaching the Final in Eastbourne and the Round of 16 at Wimbledon, but lost in the First Round of the US Open. He is a much stronger player on clay than he is on hard, and he is drawn against a very tough opponent here in the form of Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics. Sonego should be considered the favorite due to his higher ranking but may be in for a tough time at the office here.
Marton Fucsovics is ranked #41 in the world rankings and is unseeded here at the 2021 Moselle Open. The big Hungarian is an extremely talented player but has struggled to put together inconsistent results throughout his career. Like his opponent Lorenzo Sonego he has had a fairly inconsistent season, and is coming off a poor US Open campaign where he lost in the First Round. His game is perfectly suited to the indoor surface here however, and his big serve and huge forehand are sure to cause the Italian fifth seed a lot of problems. Despite being the underdog here in Metz he certainly is capable of getting the win here due to the surface and he will be backing himself to cause the upset.
This will be the fourth meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour with Fucsovics leading the head to head series 2-1. Lorenzo Sonego won the last meeting earlier this year on clay, his preferred surface, but the last time that they met on indoor courts in 2019 ended in a victory for the Hungarian. I am expecting a very close battle filled with fantastic tennis, as both men are tremendous shot makers. While Sonego is ranked higher, the Hungarian is much more comfortable on this quicker surface and has just a bit more firepower. I think this match will go the distance, but I am backing Fucsovics to have the edge here and come away with a hard fought three set win. His big serve and experience will likely be the difference here, and I expect him to win in three sets, advancing to the Round of 16 here at the 2021 Moselle Open.
