TennisSection previews the 2021 Stuttgart Open as Felix Auger-Aliassime (3) meets Ugo Humbert (6) in the Quarter-finals on Friday, June 11th 2021.
Will Ugo Humbert continue to build on the strong form he has shown here at the 2021 Stuttgart Open and cause the upset? Will Felix Auger-Aliassime show us his strong grass court game as he aims to prepare himself best for Wimbledon at the end of the month? Both of these youngsters can win this match if they are at their best, but only one will make their way to the Semi-finals. Who will it be?
Ugo Humbert came through an extremely tight first set against Yannick Hanfmann in the second round which then gave him the momentum to win the match in straight sets 7-6(9)/6-2. Ugo was not really impressive on the clay courts this year, but here on grass and faster conditions, I believe he will be able to have some big wins under his belt. Ugo is very speedy around the court, and because he is a lefty, he moves opponents in uncomfortable positions consistently. However, Ugo Humbert will now meet the also very in form Felix Auger-Aliassime at the 2021 Stuttgart Open. Can he cause the upset?
Felix Auger-Aliassime was able to beat the in form Lloyd Harris, who has beaten some big names like Dominic Thiem in 2021, in the second round in straight sets 6-3/7-6. Felix is a much more comfortbale player when he is playing in these faster conditions such as grass. Felix has beaten the likes of Nick Kyrgios and Stefanos Tsitsipas in these conditions a couple years ago because he hits so flat that the ball moves through the court at incredible speeds, ensuring he gets on top of rallies a lot of the time. However, Felix Auger-Aliassime will now have to ensure he is solid on his backhand side as he meets the lefty Ugo Humbert who will want to keep the ball in that backhand corner.
Felix Auger-Aliassime and Ugo Humbert have met 1 time before, with Ugo Humbert leading the head to head 1-0. They met in 2019 at Wimbledon where Ugo won in straight sets 6-4/7-5/6-3. Although Ugo won that encounter, since then, I think that Felix has had the better runs of form (even though he does not have a title and Ug has won 2 titles). Ugo is much better in indoor hard court conditions, where his game thrives due to the speed. However, Felix is a better base player on grass and he will get revenge for that Wimbledon defeat. I still expect it to be tight, most likely 3 sets, but FAA will win and make his way to the Semi-finals of the 2021 Stuttgart Open.
