Will Daniil Medvedev continue to impress on grass as he is now on a 6 match win streak on the surface? Will Marin Cilic show him what a real experienced grass court player looks like after he has had multiple finals here at Wimbledon? Both players can win this match if they are at the top of their game, but only one will make their way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Who will it be?
Marin Cilic put on a solid performance in the Round of 64, beating Benjamin Bonzi in 4 sets 6-4/3-6/6-3/7-6. Marin Cilic has been playing well on grass, winning the Stuttgart Open just a few weeks ago, and now making it to the Round of 32 here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Marin is very experienced on this surface and he has been so close to winning the title before. However, over the last 2 years he has been somewhat inconsistent. Now that he has found some form, he will aim to show us that he can compete at the highest level on this surface, but he meets an in form Daniil Medvedev before he is able to do that.
Daniil Medvedev cruised through his Round of 64 match against the young Spaniard, Carlos Alcaraz, beating him in straight sets 6-4/6-1/6-2. The first set was somewhat tight with Alcaraz giving it his all and getting a lot of energy from the crowd. However, the next two sets were an absolute domination from Medvedev who raised his level even more and got the job done. Daniil Medvedev has been solid on grass over the last 2 weeks, winning the title in Mallorca just last week, but he will have to be at his best now as he meets a grass lover in Marin Cilic who has also been in good form.
Daniil Medvedev and Marin Cilic have met 1 time before, with Daniil Medvedev leading the head to head 1-0. They met in 2019 on a hard court in Washington where Medvedev won 6-4/7-6. It was a tight match, but since then Medvedev has improved drastically. If Marin had been more dominant in his Round of 64 win, I would have perhaps seen this match going to 5 sets. However, he lost a set to someone he shouldn’t have. Medvedev will take that and use it to increase his confidence. I still expect a somewhat tight match between an in form top tier player and a former Grand Slam Champion, but Medvedev will make his way to the Round of 16 of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
