Will Egor Gerasimov manage to cause the upset? Will Karen Khachanov get some confidence and finally make waves at a major? This match-up will be interesting to see whether Khachanov is able to maintain the solid level we know he’s capable of and take it with him deep into the tournament. Who will go on to the Round of 32 at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships?
Egor Gerasimov got through in four sets today, getting a fairly convincing win to move on to play Khachanov. Let’s get right into it, Gerasimov’s service numbers were pretty down today, as were his opponents, I don’t think that the quality of the match today can safely tell us whether or not Egor is able to push Karen. If he does want to be able to stand a chance, he’ll need to play some very high level tennis, he’ll need to play super aggressive and try to throw his opponent off his game, otherwise, I don’t think he’ll have much of a chance to be able to go through. Gerasimov has struggled this season on the ATP Tour, losing early in every tournament he’s played in, this combined with the level that he displayed today, I am not very hopeful that he’ll be able to produce a good enough performance to take out Karen, even if it’s his very best.
Karen Khachanov has been struggling on the ATP Tour this year, and at this point, any win he gets is a good win. Despite all his struggles, there is a reason that he has had the success he has, and we know that even his average level would be good enough to defeat someone like Egor Gerasimov. He defeated Mackenzie McDonald today in four sets as well, recovering to storm back after dropping the first set, his service numbers were very high today, which is a great sign for someone like Khachanov as he has such a great serve. If he can keep a solid level throughout this encounter, I expect him to come through relatively easily. This win should get him some confidence, and I think if Karen is able to be confident, and play that high level of tennis we know he can, then he has a great shot of progressing deep in this tournament and many more in the future.
Egor Gerasimov and Karen Khachanov have met one time before on the ATP Tour with Karen Khachanov leading the series 1-0. The match they played took place 3 years ago in Russia, with Khachanov winning in straight sets. It was an indoor hard court, where Khachanov has shown lots of success, winning a masters 1000 title in Paris. This of course correlates with grass courts as both are quick surfaces, Karen has a good game for the grass, and I really feel as if he has the potential to go deep here. I do expect for him to get a nice, straight-forward win come Wednesday and progress to the Round of 32 here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
