Elina Svitolina had a pretty good end to the season last year, marrying top ATP player Gael Monfils, and raising her level to make some deep runs in the second half of the year. I expect her to follow up on those results as she aims to take down Fiona Ferro, who is ranked quite low and has not had too many matches under her belt, certainly not enough to be too competitive against a player of the stature of Elina Svitolina. Let’s see if she can take down Ferro and get a good start to her campaign here at the 2022 Australian Open.
Fiona Ferro has been playing some pretty decent tennis since she arrived down under. Ultimately though, to take down a player of the quality of Elina Svitolina will prove to be a task too difficult to complete. Ferro just doesn’t have the level to take someone like that on, and will likely serve mostly as a catalyst for getting Svitolina going this tournament as she aims to get a good start to the 2022 Australian Open and book herself a place in the Round of 64.
Elina Svitolina and Fiona Ferro have met once before, with Elina Svitloina leading the head to head 1-0. Their one meeting came just last year, with Svitolina beating Ferro 6-4 6-4. With their last match being pretty recent, I expect Svitolina to know exactly what to do. However, I do expect her to struggle a little bit. She hasn’t had good results since she’s arrived in Australia, while Ferro was able to secure a few match wins. Ultimately, I expect her to get the win and move on at the 2022 Australian Open.
