TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Elina Svitolina takes on Magda Linette in the Round of 64 on Thursday, July 1st 2021.
Will Magda Linette pull off a stunner of an upset? Will Elina Svitolina finally find her form and make the deep runs at slams we know she can make? This contest will be a good one to watch in order to see where the level of Svitolina is at because if it’s high, she can make some waves. Who will move on to the Round of 32 at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships?
Elina Sivtolina comes into Wimbledon this year with some trouble on the WTA Tour this year, not being able to go deep in many tournaments. Despite this, she came through her first round match in 3 sets. She will need to get her service numbers a lot better though. While she is the 3rd seed and thus has a great draw, I don’t think her average level right now could be enough despite the ranking difference. We know how well she can play at her highest level, so I do expect her to come through anyway, I think if she’s able to focus on staying solid on serve and just jumping on any opportunities she can get, then she’ll be able to get through pretty easily.
Magda Linette came through in three sets as well, and with the service numbers on her side, I’m not too confident she can pull through even if Svitolina plays at a lower level. She gave away 5 breaks, 14 break points in total, and serving at 60%, only winning 55% of her first serve points. It’s not a good sign when you’re winning more on your second serve than your first, and your first service is that low at 55%. She will really need to get those numbers in check, otherwise, I doubt she can do much of anything against Elina. She’ll really just have to try to play the best tennis of her life, playing far from normal and super aggressive, otherwise I don’t think there’s a chance.
Elina Svitolina and Magda Linette have had two career meetings, with Elina Svitolina leading the head to head 2-0. Their most recent meeting was in 2020 at the Strasbourg Open, with Svitolina winning in two tight sets. While their two matches don’t really give us much, it certainly doesn’t help Linette at all, but both players should be pretty familiar with each other’s games, and there should be no surprises going into this one. I think Svitolina should have some confidence that she got through her first match, and with the good draw she has, I’m not concerned for her to be knocked out this early in the second round.
