Wimbledon Championships 2021: Sloane Stephens vs. Kristie Ahn Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Wimbledon Championships as Sloane Stephens meets Kristie Ahn in the Second Round on Wednesday June 30th, 2021.

An “All-American” clash awaits us here in the Second Round of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, as former Grand Slam champion Sloane Stephens will face countrywoman Kristie Ahn for a spot in the Third Round. Both women upset higher-ranked players in their opening match and will be hoping to go further in the draw. Who will win and advance here?

Sloane Stephens is currently ranked #73 on the WTA Tour, and is unseeded here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The former US Open champion has been ranked in the top 5 before, but has seen her career go on a sharp decline over the past few years. After showing glimpses of returning to form this year, she entered Wimbledon in decent form but was not expected to go very far here, especially since she was drawn against former champion Petra Kvitova. Remarkably, the American played outstanding tennis to get the shocking win, defeating her Czech opponent in straight sets. All that is seemingly missing from Stephens is her confidence, and this victory will have gone a long way towards that returning. She enters this match against Kristie Ahn as the favorite, and should be expected to advance here.

Kristie Ahn is ranked #117 in the WTA world rankings, and came through the Qualifying Rounds to reach the main draw here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. She had never previously won a match at this event, and with a tough First Round opponent in Heather Watson standing in her way, this year was not expected to be much different. However, she displayed great fighting spirit to come back from a set down against the Brit, and will have been delighted to finally get her first Wimbledon win. Despite her solid play, Sloane Stephens is expected to be an even tougher test for the young American and she is the underdog here.

This is the first meeting between the two players on the WTA tour, and their head to head record stands at 0-0. This should be a relatively straightforward match to call, and should result in a comfortable match for Sloane Stephens. The American has tons of experience at this level, and while grass is not her favorite surface she has performed much better on it than her opponent Kristie Ahn, and will be riding the wave of confidence after that shocking win over Petra Kvitova. I expect Stephens to win easily, advancing to the Third Round here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.
