World number 12 Garbine Muguruza will face Qualifier Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove in the Second Round here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The 11th seeded Spaniard was in dominant form throughout her First Round victory and is the huge favorite on paper here. Can Kerkhove cause one of the biggest upsets in Wimbledon history by getting the win here?
Garbine Muguruza has been one of the most outstanding players on the WTA Tour over the past decade, and has won multiple Grand Slam titles. The Spaniard is a former champion here at Wimbledon, and will be one of the main contenders for the crown this year. She started her 2021 Wimbledon Championships in dominant fashion, crushing Fiona Ferro 6-0, 6-1 in only 51 minutes. When she is in form she is extremely hard to beat, and she is considered the massive favorite here over Lesley Kerkhove.
Lesley Kerkhove is currently ranked #174 in the WTA rankings, and entered this main draw as a Qualifier. The Dutchwoman mainly plays on the ITF Tour, and only has five WTA wins to her name over her career, including a single win on grass. After quietly coming through the Qualifying Rounds, she wasn’t expected to trouble her First Round opponent Svetlana Kuznetsova much, but apparently she didn’t get the memo, providing one of the shocks of the tournament so far. She won 6-3, 6-3 in a very good performance, and returned extremely well. While that was a good win, her next opponent Garbine Muguruza is a whole other level and Kerkhove’s run is expected to end here.
This will be the second meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour, with the Spaniard leading the head to head 1-0. Interestingly, their only meeting was seven years ago on grass and was a straight sets victory for Muguruza. This is a very easy pick, and I can safely say that Garbine Muguruza will win this match very comfortably, in straight sets. She is a much better and more accomplished player than her opponent and this should be one of the quicker matches of the Second Round here at Wimbledon.
