Or will we see the former world number one Karolina Pliskova find her form after a tough start on the grass? This first round encounter promises to be one of intrigue, where both players will attempt to make a strong showing on the grass, but only one player can move onto the second round of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, let’s dive into it.
Karolina Pliskova had a less than favorable start to her grass court season, suffering two first round losses at the Grass Court Championships in Berlin, as well as the Eastbourne Open just one week prior. However, she remains the favorite in this matchup, being the 8th seed and 10th ranked player in the world. Karolina Pliskova has made two Round of 16 appearances at Wimbledon in her career. It’s no secret that she can play on the grass, and along with her previous performances on the grass compared to her opponent, she will be dubbed the favorite to take the match against Tamara Zidansek.
Tamara Zidansek enters this year’s Wimbledon just coming off an excellent run to the semifinals at the French Open. With no grass court match practice and less than impessive perfomances at the Lawn England Club in previous years, Tamara Zidansek will need to come up with a brilliant performance to pull through this match. We know she is an excellent clay court player, however, conditions do not suit her here and she will need to dig deep and come up with an inspired grass court performance to get through her higher ranked opponent, Karolina Pliskova.
This will be the very first meeting between Karolina Pliskova and Tamara Zidansek , as such, we have no indicators of how this could be a tough match-up for either player. However, from what we do know about the players’ level on the grass, and Tamara Zidansek getting no match practice on the surface, it makes it difficult to question the advantage Karolina Pliskova holds despite a slight decline in form. Taking all this into account here at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, I expect a rather straightforward match in the favor of Karolina Pliskova for a spot in the Round of 64.
