Eastbourne Open 2021: Lorenzo Sonego vs. Alexander Bublik Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Eastbourne Open as Lorenzo Sonego (3) meets Alexander Bublik (8) in the Quarter-finals on Thursday, June 24th 2021.

Will Alexander Bublik be able to put on another strong performance on grass as we all know he is able to do with his amazing game? Will Lorenzo Sonego get his second win on grass of the season as he aims to get ready for Wimbledon next week? Both players can win this match if they are on top of their game, but only one will make their way to the Semi-finals of the 2021 Eastbourne Open. Who will it be?

Alexander Bublik has been strong all week here at the Viking International, beating his compatrior in the first round, Mikhail Kukushkin, and then beating Egor Gerasimov in the Round of 16 in straight sets 6-2/6-2. Alexander Bublik is a very similar player to Nick Kyrgios in my opinion and this means he loves playing on grass because he can hit the ball so flat and his trick shots just come off better than most other surfaces. Alexander Bublik has had a strong year this year, winning over 20 matches and losing 15 along the way. This will give him the necessary confidence here at the 2021 Eastbourne Open as he know that if he beats Lorenzo Sonego, he will most likely make his way to the Final.

Lorenzo Sonego was able to bounce back after his bad week last week on grass by beating John Millman in the Round of 16 here in straight sets 6-4/6-2. Lorenzo Sonego is a very strong player with a good resume this year, but his best surface is not grass. Lorenzo Sonego prefers slower surfaces where his movement can shine, but this does not mean he cannot put on a strong performance here at the Viking International. Lorenzo Sonego will have to be at his best in this Semi-final as he meets the always tough Alexander Bublik, and if he comes out at 80% of less, he will not stand a chance.

Lorenzo Sonego and Alexander Bublik have met 3 times before, with Lorenzo Sonego leading the head to head 2-1. They last met last year in Paris where Lorenzo Sonego won in straight sets 6-1/6-4. Although Lorenzo leads the head to head, I think that Alexander Bublik will win this match. Grass suits Bublik’s style of play much more and Sonego is still adapting to the surface. Bublik can move opponents around with great ease on this surface, and the low bouncing ball suits him a lot. Lorenzo can keep things tight, but Bublik will make his way to the Semi-finals of the 2021 Eastbourne Open.
