TennisSection previews the 2021 Toronto Open as Gael Monfils takes on Frances Tiafoe in the Round of 16 on Thursday, August 12th, 2021.
Will Frances Tiafoe continue to impress? Will Gael Monfils back up his big win? This match will be an interesting one, where we have one of the young guns taking on a veteran of the ATP Tour. Who will move on to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Toronto Open?
Frances Tiafeo got a fantastic win over Denis Shapovalov today, while Shapovalov definitely did not play near his best level, Tiafoe was very solid and has been in some pretty solid form as of late in general. He’s taking on Gael Monfils, who is not getting better physically, and barely came through in 3 sets over John Millman. Tiafoe plays best when he’s aggressive, and his groundstrokes are very versatile in terms of their results, he can create awesome angles, his defensive shots are good as are his closing shots. I suspect Monfils will give Tiafoe many balls which he will be able to attack, where in turn Tiafoe will take many of the points, this will be especially true on Monfils’ second serves, where he will need to serve better for sure against Frances if he doesn’t want to get bombarded on that end. Tiafoe has a great shot here to move through to the quarterfinals at the 2021 Toronto Open.
Gael Monfils barely came through in 3 sets over John Millman today, an excellent win where we saw some nice vintage shots of his. Despite this, he will have a tough battle on his hands coming up against Frances Tiafoe, who is in great form and took out the crowd favorite in a crushing straight sets today. Gael mostly thrives on combining his great service and versatile movement with penetrating groundstrokes that he can rip on occasion to all corners of the court. However, lately his shots haven’t had that same spunk so to say, so it will be a lot more difficult to avoid getting attacked by Frances, especially on second serves where many of them will be taken advantage of. For Gael to win, he’ll have to try and play deep in the court and be as aggressive as possible, if he can do this with not too many unforced errors I like his chances to be competitive.
Frances Tiafoe and Gael Monfils have met once before, with Frances Tiafoe leading the head to head 1-0. They met in 2019 at Cincinatti, with Tiafoe winning in straight sets. If Tiafoe was able to win in that fashion when he was worse and Monfils was better, it’ll most certainly be a tough one tomorrow for Gael, Frances will most likely stay persistent and aggressive, but he’ll also have to maintain his service, Gael will likely fight back and look for ways to attack him, so Tiafoe will need to keep that first serve percentage high, if he does that then I like his chances to get a nice easy win tomorrow to move through to the quarterfinals of the 2021 Toronto Open.
