Will Jurij Rodionov be able to beat another experienced player here at the 2021 Stuttgart Open as he looks to make his way to the Semi-finals? Will Alex de Minaur be able to get an easier match under his belt after his first opening round match here in Stuttgart went the distance? This will be an interesting match between a wildcard with nothing to lose and a more experienced, but still young, opponent who will want to go deep into tournaments to prepare himself for Wimbledon. Jurij Rodionov did not really spend much time on the court in the second round, leading 5-3 in the first set against peter Gojowczyk before the German retired with an injury. However, Jurij Rodionov has been playing some good tennis this week, being able to beat the likes of Dominic Koepfer in the opening round who was nearly beating Roger Federer just a week ago. Now, Jurij Rodionov will have to be at the top of his game as he meets an opponent who is relentless on the court and who has so much speed, he seems to be everywhere at all times, Alex de Minaur. Can the wildcard cause the huge upset here at the 2021 Stuttgart Open?
Alex de Minaur had to fight back from a set down against his fellow Aussie, Jordan Thompson, in the second round, beating him in 3 sets 6-7/6-3/6-4. It was an extremely tight match from start to finish and it was obviously going to be with this being his first grass match in 2 years, as well as him not having played well on the clay courts this year. Alex de Minaur will prefer these conditions here because the speed of the game is fast and he is able to use his speed around the court to hit some incredible passing shots which we all love to see. However, he will want to ensure he is concentrated to not let Jurij Rodionov cause the upset.
Alex de Minaur and Jurij Rodionov have never met before, with this being their first meeting on the ATP Tour. Rodionov is the same age as Alex, but they have had different careers. Rodionov has focused on the Challenger Tour and is ranked 142 in the world, with this being his first ever ATP Tour main draw tournament. Alex is No.22 in the world and he is improving with every year. I still expect for this to be a tight match as Jurij has gotten more preparation and more matches under his belt here at the 2021 Stuttgart Open, but the experience of Alex de Minaur will come out here to get him the win.
