TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Ons Jabeur (25) meets Coco Gauff (24) in the Round of 16 on Monday, June 7th 2021.
Will Ons Jabeur continue to perform strongly here at Roland Garros as she aims to make the Quarter-finals on a side of the draw where no one would have thought she would? Will Coco Gauff continue her fairytale run alive as she aims to make the Quarter-finals of the 2021 French Open as only 17 years old? Both players can win this match if on top of their game, but only one will make their way to the Quarter-finals of Roland Garros. Who will it be?
Ons Jabeur had to fight back from a set down in the Round of 32 against Magda Linette, eventually winning the match 3-6/6-0/6-1. Ons Jabeur started the match off very poorly and she just did not seem to be finding her rhythm. However, once the set finished, she regained her composure and went on a dominant streak, winning 12 of the next 3 games. Now, Ons Jabeur will want to build on those last 2 sets and use all the momentum to get herself into the Quarter-finals of the 2021 French Open, however, she will have to be at her best as she now meets a very in form Coco Gauff.
Coco Gauff had a very short match on the court in the Round of 32, winning the first set 6-1 against Jennifer Brady and then not even having to play the second set as Brady retired with an injury. Coco Gauff has been in great form all week, and she will want to continue building on this and show everyone that she is still to be thought of as the future of the WTA Tour. Coco Gauff is only 17 years old, but she has shown us that she can definitely beat some big named players. Coco Gauff will come out here knowing that she will have a strong chance to make her way to the Quarter-finals if she is at her best, and she will not want to let Ons Jabeur stand in her way.
Coco Gauff and Ons Jabeur have met 3 times before, with Coco Gauff leading the head to head 2-1. They last met this year in Charleston where Jabeur won in straight sets 6-3/6-3. Although Ons Jabeur had won that match, Coco was not playing well back then. Now that she is playing well, I am sure that Coco Gauff will both be more energetic coming into this match as she didn’t have to play much in the Round of 32, and she will be very determined to make a name for herself amongst the youngsters. Ons Jabeur can definitely hurt her sometimes, but Coco Gauff will use her raw power and speed around the court to make her way to the Quarter-finals of the 2021 French Open.
