Paris Masters 2021: Marin Cilic vs. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Tennis Pick and Prediction

TennisSection previews the 2021 Paris Masters as Marin Cilic takes on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the Round of 64 on Tuesday, November 2nd, 2021.

Will Marin Cilic extend his winning streak after capturing a 20th career title? Will Alejandro Davidovich Fokina puncture the Croatian’s balloon and book his spot in the second round of the Paris Masters? This should make a compelling spectacle especially now that we know Cilic will get at least an extra day of rest after his title triumph.

Marin Cilic won his fourth title on Russian soil and his second on the indoor hard courts of St. Petersburg. He defeated the in-form Taylor Fritz 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 in the final. By virtue of winning his 20th career title, Cilic joins an illustrious club who have reached or bettered that milestone. He becomes the sixth active player to do so after Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Juan Martin Del Potro, and Andy Murray. And considering that Cilic’s first and second titles in St. Petersburg are precisely 10 years apart, it is a testament to his longevity and resilience. Can he continue this form here at the 2021 Paris Masters?

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina’s season has been a slow burner. But there have been intermittent periods of highs. He reached his first Masters 1000 quarterfinal on clay in Monte Carlo. That served as a springboard for a productive clay-court season in which he managed to reach the French Open quarterfinal – his first at Grand Slam level. Although his results have been wayward in recent months, he comes to the Paris Masters on the back of quarterfinal showing in Antwerp. Will he pull the rabbit out of the hat on Tuesday here at the Paris Masters.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina brings a 1-0 lead in the series, having beaten Cilic towards the tail end of last season. That meeting happened at newly minted Colonge indoor event where the Spaniard won in three sets. But Cilic was largely an out-of-sorts and out-of-form player last season. The turnaround this year has impressive. And in fairness, he looks to be enjoying his tennis again. Cilic has cut down his unforced error immeasurably in recent months despite his risk-tolerant approach. His serve continues to be a major weapon on this surface. But his ability to dictate rallies, creating sharp angles and maintaining linear precision in his groundstrokes has suffocated his opponents. The biggest danger for Cilic in this matchup is complacency. But assuming he has sufficiently recovered emotionally, he should be raring to go here at the Paris Masters.
