TennisSection previews the 2021 French Open as Alexander Zverev (6) meets Roman Safiullin in the Second Round on Wednesday June 2nd, 2021.
Sixth seeded German Alexander Zverev will face Russian Qualifier Roman Safiullin for a spot in the Third Round at the 2021 French Open. The German was pushed to the limit in his First Round match, and will be hoping for an easier day at the office here against the Russian. Can Safiullin cause the massive upset here at Roland Garros 2021? Or will Zverev cruise into the next round as expected?
Alexander Zverev is ranked #6 in the ATP world rankings, and is also seeded 6th here at Roland Garros 2021. The 2021 Madrid Masters Champion surprisingly found himself in a hole early in his First Round match against countryman Oscar Otte, being down two sets to love before recovering well to win the next three comfortably. The German star has been one of the standout players on clay this season, but will know that he has to do much better if he is to have a shot at the title here at the 2021 French Open. Luckily for him, he will face yet another player outside the top 100 in Roman Safiullin, a match that he should control while working out the kinks in his game. The matches will keep getting harder here at Roland Garros, so Alexander Zverev will need to get his act together quickly.
Roman Safiullin is currently ranked #181 in the ATP world rankings, and came through the Qualifying Rounds to enter the 2021 French Open. This is only the second time that the Russian has participated in a Grand Slam main draw, and he took full advantage of his opportunity, defeating Spaniard Carlos Taberner in four sets. Safiullin showed tremendous mental toughness in recovering from a shockingly poor second set to get the win, but knows that he will have to be far better here against Alexander Zverev. His German opponent is one of the best players in the world, and unless he plays the match of his life, it is very likely that the Russian’s stay here at Roland Garros won’t last much longer.
This is the first time that the two players will face each other on the ATP Tour, and their head to head record stands at 0-0. This match is very easy to pick, and will result in a straight-sets win for Alexander Zverev. He wasn’t outstanding in his First Round win, but dominated towards the end of the match, and should carry that momentum into this match against Roman Safiullin. The German is considered one of the favorites for the title here at the 2021 French Open, and should continue to improve here. When he is in form he is very difficult to beat on this surface, and I expect him to win this match easily, advancing to the Third Round here at Roland Garros 2021.
