TennisSection previews the 2021 Astana Open as Alexander Bublik (2) faces Soon-woo Kwon in the Semi-Finals on Saturday September 25th, 2021.
Alexander Bublik is one of the most talented yet unpredictable players on the ATP Tour, and is seeking to win the title here on home soil at the 2021 Astana Open. The Kazakh star has looked to be in great form so far this week and will next face the Korean Soon-woo Kwon for a spot in Sunday’s Final. Both men have played really well to reach this stage and will be highly motivated to win here given that the stakes are so high. Can Kwon cause the stunning upset and knock the hometown favorite out here in the Semis? Or will Bublik win as expected, taking him one step closer to the title?
Alexander Bublik is the second seed here at his home tournament in Astana, Kazakhstan and he will be highly motivated to win the title here. The Kazakh star is currently ranked #34 on the ATP Tour and is having a solid year so far. One of the most talented yet unpredictable players on Tour, Bublik has recently matured greatly as a player and does not lose his focus as much as he used to and has had some great results. After receiving a First Round bye he was pushed to the limit by Miomir Kecmanovic, dropping the first set before eventually winning 7-5 in the third. He then cruised past surprise Quarterfinalist Carlos Taberner in straight sets to set up this matchup with Soon-woo Kwon. Bublik is very unorthodox and loves to hit underarm serves, 200kmh second serves, tweeners etc and is very unsettling to his opponents. He is the massive favorite to win here and reach the final of his home tournament at the 2021 Astana Open.
Soon-Woo Kwon is unseeded here at the 2021 Astana Open and is currently ranked #82 on the ATP Tour. While he is extremely talented he is very inconsistent, and has had some fantastic wins coupled with some surprising losses. This week in Astana has been outstanding however, and he has advanced to the Semi-Finals for the loss of only one set. His Quarter-Final win over the experienced Laslo Djere was particularly impressive, as he won 6-0 in the third set in the match. Djere is much more at home on clay but is a capable opponent, and Kwon showed tremendous poise to win the decider against a much more experienced opponent. He is up against it here against local favorite Alexander Bublik, who is in great form and Kwon will have to play fantastic tennis to have any chance to advance to his first ever ATP Final here in Kazakhstan.
This will be the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour and I am expecting a relatively comfortable win for top seed Alexander Bublik. He simply is the much better player and once he keeps his focus he should not have too many issues here against a talented yet inexperienced opponent in Soon-woo Kwon. Bublik will have the home crowd behind him and will be very eager to win the title, and he is expected to do so. As always, the result depends on if he is able to keep his composure but he has been excellent in that regard so far this week and I expect that to continue in such an important match. He has too much firepower for his Korean opponent to handle and while it won’t be a walk in the park, expect Alexander Bublik to win in straight sets here, advancing to the Final here at the 2021 Astana Open.
