We have a feisty affair in store at the Strasbourg Open final as Elina Svitolina, in as a wild card entrant, plays her first WTA final since 2021 and her first as a mother against Russia’s Anna Blinkova. Svitolina broke the shackles of Clara Burel after being dominated for a set and a half by the French young gun in the semifinals. Ultimately she utilized her experience as Burel crumbled. Svitolina was forced to save three break points from 0-40 down in a very important service hold in the second set and which pretty much set the tone for the remainder of the match. Her confidence went up a notch and Burel’s game was littered with a flurry of errors. Svitolina will need an attacking mindset against Anna Blinkova who will contest her second career final. Blinkova was simply unstoppable from the baseline against an ailing Lauren Davis who was physically not at the races after her bizarre comeback against Pavlyuchenkova a day earlier. It’s been a great run from Blinkova who has only dropped one set en route to the final. But Svitolina has shown remarkable resilience to still be in the tournament. Right from when she defeated Varvara Gracheva you sensed that she would come up trumps with her experience and expertise on clay. It should be a close final and we’re backing the Ukranian to get her first title since returning from maternity.
